Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Personal, social, health and economic education or PSHE aims to give our students the knowledge, skills and understanding to lead confident, healthy and independent lives.

It is now a legal requirement to teach the majority of PSHE and the Department for Education’s’ (DfE) guidance clarifies in detail what schools must cover. In conjunction with DfE guidance and the PSHE Association’s Programmes of Study, our PSHE curriculum sets out learning opportunities for each key stage, in three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World. They build in developmental progression by revisiting themes year on year, building on and extending prior learning.

KS3 begins with how to manage the transition from primary to secondary school and looks at making informed choices about health and wellbeing, including diet, physical activity, drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Students will learn about responding in an emergency, including basic first aid and the role and influence of media on lifestyle. They will be able to identify significant relationships (parents, carers, friends, siblings) and learn to recognise and manage emotions within a range of relationships. They will analyse the concept of consent in a variety of contexts and look at where to access appropriate advice and support. In relation to the wider world, students will look at saving and debt and understand their rights and responsibilities as consumers.
