Mathematics

In KS4 GCSE students will be studying – Number, Ratio & Proportion, Algebra, Geometry & Measures, Statistics. 

The course is structured as a continuous series of units covering the main topic area and progressively introduces new concepts and skills.  

In Years 10 and 11 increasing emphasis will be placed upon the development of reasoning and proof skills. Modelling questions based on real life scenarios. 

The most able students in Year 11 are given the chance to study for the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics alongside their GCSE in Maths.

Students use the Kerboodle platform to access online books to prepare for the GCSE content, building upon the knowledge they’ve gained from previous years. Students have access to the two online textbooks and the corresponding homework books. 

The skills students will develop are: 

  • Working logically. 
  • Finding patterns and rules to describe results. 
  • Processing and interpreting data. 
  • Problem skills.  
  • Using ICT to aid the processing of information. 
  • Applying mathematics in everyday situations and developing an understanding of the part which mathematics plays in daily life. 
  • Solve problems and interpret the results. 

All students in Key Stage 4 are studying for the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics examination. Exams are available at the Higher Level (grades 9-4) or Foundation Level (grades 5- 1).  The level taken by students depends on their ability and the teacher’s recommendation. 

The course is assessed via three examinations in year 11.
