Using Phones in School

Should students be allowed to use their smart phones at school? At Rooks Heath College, mobile phones are strictly prohibited on school property. A student found using their mobile will have the device confiscated for the day. Repeat offenders can face harsher sanctions.

‘Mobile phones have the potential to be a fantastic learning tool,’ explained Dr Wilper, English teacher at Rooks Heath. ‘Using phones in school can contribute to the learning under certain controlled circumstances; however, mobile phones can also distract students and therefore detract from learning.’

What do the students think about the ban though? One Year Eight students expressed the view: ‘we should be allowed to use our phones at break and lunchtime, but if it were up to me, we would be able to use our mobiles anytime.’

When asked what most students would use their phones for at school, the student replied: ‘just for pleasure, Snapchat ,Instagram, etc.’
