Overview 

Eduqas GCSE English Language focuses on developing students’ reading, writing, and spoken communication skills. Students explore a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, both contemporary and from the 19th century, learning to analyse writers’ methods and adapt their own writing for different purposes and audiences. The course develops essential literacy and communication skills that support success across the curriculum and prepare students for further study, employment and everyday life. 

Curriculum Intent 

The GCSE English Language curriculum aims to: 

  • Develop confident, fluent readers who can interpret and evaluate a range of texts 

  • Build clear, accurate, and adaptable writing skills for a variety of purposes, forms, and audiences 

  • Strengthen technical accuracy in spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG) 

  • Encourage critical thinking and informed personal responses 

  • Foster effective spoken communication and listening skills 

  • Prepare students for real-world communication and lifelong literacy 

Curriculum Implementation 

How the curriculum is taught and organised: 

  • Explicit teaching of reading strategies, including inference, retrieval, and evaluation 

  • Modelling of high-quality writing across fiction and non-fiction forms 

  • Scaffolded practice in transactional and creative writing 

  • Regular exposure to exam-style questions and timed conditions 

  • Targeted SPaG instruction integrated into lessons 

  • Frequent formative assessment (reading questions, writing tasks, SPaG checks) 

  • Summative assessments based on Eduqas exam papers (Component 1 and 2) 

  • Mock examinations in Year 10 and Year 11 

  • Spoken Language endorsement assessed through presentations and discussions 

Sequencing of learning 

  • Year 10 develops core reading and writing skills through a range of engaging texts 

  • Students are introduced to all exam components early, including fiction reading and transactional writing 

  • Skills are revisited and built upon through interleaved practice 

  • Year 11 prioritises consolidation, exam technique, and independent application 

Assessment 

  • Frequent formative assessment (reading questions, writing tasks, SPaG checks) 

  • Summative assessments based on Eduqas exam papers (Component 1 and 2) 

  • Mock examinations in Year 10 and Year 11 

  • Spoken Language endorsement assessed through presentations and discussions
