Overview 

GCSE Geography at Key Stage 4 enables students to develop a deeper understanding of the physical and human processes that shape our world. Following the AQA GCSE Geography specification, students investigate a range of contemporary geographical issues through the study of places, environments and people. The course develops geographical knowledge alongside essential skills including map interpretation, data analysis, fieldwork and critical thinking. Students are encouraged to apply their understanding to real-world issues and make informed decisions about the challenges facing the planet. 

Curriculum Intent 

The Geography curriculum aims to: 

• Develop secure knowledge and understanding of physical and human geography.  

• Build strong geographical enquiry, fieldwork and decision-making skills.  

• Enable students to interpret and evaluate geographical evidence from a range of sources.  

• Develop an understanding of contemporary environmental, social and economic issues at local, national and global scales.  

• Encourage independent thinking, critical analysis and informed decision-making.  

• Prepare students for success in GCSE examinations and further geographical study.  

• Foster curiosity, resilience and an appreciation of the changing world.  

Key knowledge and skills: 

• Physical geography including natural hazards, ecosystems, rivers and coasts.

Sequencing of Learning 

• The curriculum is structured around the three GCSE components: Living with the Physical Environment, Challenges in the Human Environment and Geographical Applications.

• Geographical skills, fieldwork and examination technique are embedded throughout the course.  

• Knowledge and skills are revisited regularly to strengthen understanding and prepare students for external examinations.  

Assessment 

• Three externally assessed examination papers covering physical geography, human geography and geographical applications.  

• Ongoing formative assessment through knowledge quizzes, retrieval activities, end-of-topic assessments and examination-style questions.  

• Regular opportunities to practise GCSE examination techniques, including extended responses and decision-making exercises.  

• Mock examinations in Year 10 and Year 11 to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.
