Opportunity through Learning

Trip to the Holocaust Memorial Day Events

On 5th February a group of Year 9 students had the opportunity of attending The Holocaust Memorial Day Events held at Belmont Synagogue.

The purpose of this visit was to enable students to make a connection between the Holocaust and subsequent genocides, also to promote tolerance and individual personal responsibly in today‚Äôs world.  It was open to all members of the Year Group and was free of charge.

After a brief film and a discussion group during which our students made excellent contributions, it was snack time.  Very many cakes were consumed!

The second half of the event was our meeting with a Holocaust Survivor, Tobi Biber.  She told her story to us and it was fascinating and heart-breaking at the same time.  The students were spell bound;  they could not believe her strength of character and bravery under such appalling circumstances.  I was proud of the very many and varied questions our students asked;  it was obvious that Tobi was greatly moved.

Finally a candle was lit in memory of all victims of genocides and our students filled in postcards stating what they had learnt and how they felt.  Five of these cards are on a display in the synagogue along with others from local schools.

This visit has enriched the History syllabus for our History Bridging students and has also benefitted all who attended.  We now have a greater understanding.
