Media Studies

The aim of the Media curriculum at KS4 is, through academic and creative study, to teach and facilitate students to become self-confident, enquiring and inquisitorial consumers, critics and producers of the media landscape.  The KS4 Media curriculum builds upon the foundational skills learned in Year 9 with students continuing to explore the media’s influence and place in society through the theoretical framework of Media Language, Representation, Audience and Industry.  Currently, the school offers Eduqas GCSE Media Studies and the Pearson Edexcel BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 Tech Award in Creative Media Production.  This combination of qualifications recognises the diverse needs and aspirations of our learners, giving students the opportunity to study Media with either an academic or vocational approach.

The curriculum is sequenced in a manner to enable students to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts through analytical and practical activities.  Alongside development of practical skills in production techniques, careers are explicitly taught through the curriculum and in the BTEC qualification all assessment tasks are designed around ‘industry driven’ briefs.  The skills and knowledge acquired through the completion of either GCSE Media Studies or the BTEC Tech Award in Creative Media Production will prepare students not only for further study at KS5 but also for future careers in the Media Industry.
