Classics - Latin

This curriculum aims to provide a solid foundation in the acquisition of Latin vocabulary and in the understanding of basic Latin grammar. It also aims to enable learners to gain knowledge and understanding of the Roman world through regular Civilisation lessons.

In particular, this curriculum enables learners to:

  • develop and deploy their knowledge of vocabulary and morphology in order to read and understand Latin passages of increasing difficulty
  • develop their knowledge and understanding of Roman culture and civilisation and its associated values and society through the careful planning of Civilisation lessons in the curriculum and embedding of Civilisation elements into all lessons
  • develop and apply their critical and reflective skills to evaluate a range of sources from the Roman world

It also encourages learners to:

  • deploy their knowledge and understanding of the ancient language to deepen their understanding of English and other languages
  • relate their knowledge and understanding of the ancient world to other disciplines
  • develop research and analytical skills which will empower them to become independent students and enquirers, equipping them for further study in arts, humanities and sciences.

Starting with Year 7 in September 2020, a new Latin reading course (Suburani) is being introduced, phasing out the old course (Cambridge Latin Course). Much has changed since the storylines of the UK’s existing reading courses were written (between 30 and 50 years ago), both in terms of our understanding of Roman civilisation and in terms of the issues which are important to students and teachers. This new course provides an opportunity to reconsider some priorities, provide a more balanced coverage of women and men, show the diversity of the Roman empire and address other issues are important to teachers and their students.
